What Matters Most

Thank you to everyone who has kept my family in your thoughts and prayers over the last little while. It has been a crazy few weeks for us—the kind of crazy that makes you realize what's really most important in your life. Mom had open heart surgery last Thursday. To say that it was scary would be a huge understatement. I haven't been home much since last Wednesday, and I've found that doing laundry, watering my lawn, cleaning my bathroom, emptying my dishwasher, and other such mundane things really aren't as important as I sometimes think they are (although my laundry situation is becoming a bit more critical and it's nice that it has rained so much lately that my grass isn't dead). What's really important is that my mom came through surgery fine and is recovering more quickly than we were expecting. She was home before Jonathan left on his mission and will be able to be at Joseph's wedding. And it's most important that no matter what happens—now or in the future—we can be together as a forever family.

On Monday night, when I was helping Jonathan finish packing, we had Chinese food and watched Ferris Bueller's Day Off. That may sound like nothing exciting, but it was a night to remember all the similar nights we'd had before and have a little more fun before he left for two years. All of those little memories through the years add up to what matters most: the love we share together, and I'm so grateful for it.
